MADISON, NY - During a time where giving takes center stage, students at Madison Central School and their families have once again stepped up to the plate to ensure local residents have access to basic necessities. On Tuesday, January 4th, over 750 donated items and additional monetary donations were brought to their new home at the Madison Baptist Church food bank to cap off another successful edition of the MCS Student Council’s December food drive.
Through December 22nd, students in grades 6-12 were asked to bring donations of food and other essential items to their class advisor. The spirit of giving coincided with the spirit of competition, as the classes were also competing to see who could donate the most items as part of the larger spirit week competition between them.
When the donations were counted, the tenth grade class took home top honors as the group who donated the most items.
The student council’s executive team took care of delivering the items on a sunny and seasonably warm afternoon. The executive team of Anna McNamara, Ayden Zbock, Myah Hauck, and Maria Peavey were joined by 6th grade teacher Amber Neiss and teaching assistant Darcy Schenck on delivery duties.
Church representatives were delighted as a busload of items was brought into the food pantry area. They remarked that this impactful donation would keep their immediate ordering expenses to a minimum.
As student council advisor, Neiss could not have been more proud of the students’ generosity.
“The food drive this year was a huge success,” Neiss said. “The student council members are always looking for ways to give back to our community. This is just one of the ways that we like to make sure that we help out!”
The Madison Baptist Church is located at 3685 North Street in Madison.
