Sophomore Creates 'Inside Out' Mural

Sophomore Zoey Last completed her first public art project – and it’s right here at MCS.

An avid art student, Zoey spent several weeks creating a mural inspired by the movie “Inside Out 2” on a bulletin board outside the Counseling Office, sketching outlines of the characters named for different emotions and then coloring them in.

“I draw a lot to calm myself and Mrs. Buckley [the elementary counselor] saw my drawing of the Anxiety character and said I should do something bigger,” Zoey said.

She largely worked on the independent project during her study halls, and she got help with the character Envy from her friend Novalee Foster, a freshman.

Curriculum Coordinator Amanda Rotach said the mural ties into some of the social-emotional learning work that elementary classes are doing this year. It also inspired MCS administrators and counselors to put together a group costume for Halloween, with each one dressing as a different emotion.

Zoey said she has received many compliments on the mural, particularly from elementary school students.

“I hope they are inspired by it,” she said. “That’s why I wanted to do it – to inspire them to do what they set their mind to and to do more with art.”
